According to the Dog Breed Info Center, the Mi-Ki (pronounced Me-Key) is an "intelligent, calm, sweet natured, and affectionate dog. Their activity level is low to moderate. They are friendly and alert, making an excellent companion to the handicapped."  They are laid back, and seldom bark, but if threatened they will stand their ground.  The Mi-Ki love to be around people and readily accept strangers. The Mi-Ki have a very even temperament, which makes them an ideal therapy dog. The Mi-Ki love kids. Usual height for a Mi-Ki is 10-11 inches and up to 10 pounds is acceptable for the breed.  Mi-Ki can easily be kept by those with limited mobility or apartment dwellers as they can be trained to use a litter pan or piddle pad rather than needing to be walked repeatedly throughout the day. These little animals will readily steal the heart of anyone who gets to know them.
The Mi-Ki are a relatively new breed with somewhat contested origins. According to the International Mi-Ki Registry, the breed was started in the 1980's by a woman known by several names including Maureen Westberg and Micki Mackin. She is said to have  combined several breeds including Papillion, which contributes to the breed's high intelligence and lovable manner, the Japanese Chin, which gives them their shortened nose, long haired turned up tail and eye set, and the Maltese which gives them their beautiful coat and the pure white color, we often see. The small Shih Tzu gave the Mi-Ki a non-shed coat and a variety of colors. It is said that early on she introduced a Papillion/Yorkshire Terrier mix stud to some of her females. She did not keep good records of the pairings so percentage of mix is impossible to ascertain. The international Mi-Ki Registry proclaims to be the developing founder of this new breed. They intend to maintain the breed's integrity through a strict breeding program, including DNA profiling (through the United Kennel Club, Inc.)
